Campus Philly

Hey guys. I've been on the run, so I'm sorry that I haven't posted in a while. I did go to another CEO presentation, but I'll tell you about that a little bit later. Right now, I want to tell you about this cool little card I learned about at work. The program the card belongs to is called Campus Philly. This card just gives me another reason to be all over the place in Philadelphia.

Well, with your Campus Philly card (they give you one that looks like a credit card and one to go on your key chain) you can get discounts all around Philadelphia. There's memberships to gyms, about four hair salons (for those nights you want to look fly for a party), a piercing shop (if you're into that), a sneaker store in the mall, and so much more! I just got the card today so I can't really tell you where I've been yet. I did get some for my friends so we'll be going out together, acting silly all the way.

The best thing is that the Campus Philly card is free. Stop playing!!!! You get all these discounts and it costs nothing to you. That's the best deal in the entire world. With my card I can go back to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and check out the other side of the museum (and then tell you about it). Check it out (www.campusphilly.org), I promise you that you won't be disappointed.

If you want to find out about more stuff to do around campus, you can call the office I work at which is called student life. [215-895-1328 or 215-895-2501]. If you're not a phone person, they have a website www.drexel.edu/studentlife. You'll find out about the fraternities and sororities, clubs like the step team, engineers club, campus activities board, and many groups for different cultures and races. Go Drexel!!!

Weekend Madness

Well, you guys missed me last week because my laptop is gone and I have to use public computers for the next two weeks. Thank goodness Drexel has all these computers available to use, and I might even rent a laptop somewhere on campus. Anyway, let me tell you about my fabulous weekend before I have to trail off to class.

Well then, my Saturday was a fashion show hosted Black Student Union here on campus. It was great. They had African clothes, summer clothes, bathing suits, retro clothing, and there was even a comedy show incorporated. There was a dance competition and the show was dedicated to a faculty member that passed away of cancer. I had a great time. The show had been talked about since October. Three of my close friends were in it so I got the second hand experience on what it was like to slave at practices that ended at two in the morning and having to go to practice on Sunday. It was great!! I bet the models understood why they had to practice so much now, the show was flawless (no one tripped, what a miracle!!)

The after party was great too. I went with a friend on mine that I met when I first arrived in the city. The club was really nice. It was the Marathon Grill at 10th and Walnut. Soda was free all night!! That was a plus for me because I don't drink. The D.J. was great, the people were there to have fun. Everyone was dressed in their best. It was just a night out with my homies kickin' it gangsta style (had to get ethnic on ya'll, lol). The absolute best part was I only paid $5.00 to get in. How cheap is that!!!???!!

Sunday, I went to the Philadephia Museum of Art with my roomate and our friend for our cultural passport event (which means I got in for free). The exhibit they're showing now is about Frida Kahlo (her picture is at the right), a female Mexican painter (with a strong uni-brow). Woo!! I didn't get to go inside though, I didn't have any cash on me. I did get to see a lot more things around the museum then the first time I went. I saw a Chinese tea house that was actually decorated like a tea house in the middle of a village. I saw this huge depiction of the crucifixion suspended from the ceiling (for all you Christians out there, it was amazing, the Christian section of the museum will make you appreciate the sacrifice even more). There were paintings of innocent babies playing in water (The Source of Life). My favorite painting of all was of this lady in all black (against a black background) who still looked sexy and seductive (Arrangement in Black by: James Abbott McNeill Whistler). The painting simply took my breath away.

So, this weekend I was a busy bee. Partly because I had a lot of assignments due, and partly because my laptop is M.I.A. So, I leave you here again, pondering another one of my adventures out and about in Philadelphia. There is an open house today(February 18th, 2008). Maybe one of you guys that is at the event will read my blog. Maybe one of you guys who reads my blog will come to an event. Great stuff.... Don't be afraid to come on out to Philadelphia and experience what we have to offer. You won't be disappointed.

Physics Day

Well today my lovely people Drexel hosted another event called the "Annual Physics Open House & Kaczmarczik Lecture". I was basically an escort for all the students and teachers that decided to show up for physics day (and believe me there were a lot). This event wasn't only for students interested in Drexel, this was for students that were just interested in physics. There were a bunch of people, it was chaotic!! I didn't know so many people were actually interested in physics (and a few were here for chemistry).

So while I was walking everyone to their different sessions, I was actually learning something also. The first presentation was about sickle cell anemia. A professor here at Drexel studies sickle cell and how they can tell if a person has it. They told us how it formed and even if they can find a cure. The second session showed outer space. It was a 3D projection and it felt like we were flying through the stars. We saw galaxies and even named a few. That was pretty interesting because we got to see what happened when planets collide and form new planets.

The third session was about super low temperatures. The presenter (Dr. Ramos) froze a flower with Nitrogen. The flower was so cold, when you touched it, it shattered like glass. He also showed how science can make magnets repel each other. He showed this by making a magnet float in mid-air! He explained that this would work with something as heavy as a sumo-wrestler because the magnets opposition was so strong. The last session was about molecular brushes. I wasn't too clear about what they do because we were short on time but few people study this topic. However, the professer (Dr. Penn) explained that these brushes can be used to keep joints (like knees and elbows) from touching each other, which ultimately can lead to the cure for arthritis. It was pretty interesting.

Now I know most people think physics is repulsive and pointless. I actually thought that going into this physics presentation, but I actually did learn some cool facts while I was showing high school students around. So, if you've applied already or have gotten accepted already, definitely look out for all those cool flyers Drexel sends you. Don't toss them in the trash, actually look at them. You should even try and go to something that you think might be boring, you could learn something new. College is about trying new things, but you don't have to wait until you get to college to go out and explore. Try it now!! You'll probably see me around in my bright yellow t-shirt!! Don't be afraid to ask me anything!!

Philadelphia City!

Well then, I'm a little late reporting on my weekend but classes are getting hectic. We're in our 5th week already, which means we're halfway through. This weekend was relaxing though, and I've discovered more of Phildelphia than I thought there ever was.

So my boyfriend came to visit and he brought his credit card! Instead of staying on campus and playing Monopoly in my room, he decided to take me around Phildelphia, for his exploration and mine. On Friday we navigated Center City and South Street, and boy was there a lot to see. He took me to dinner at Applebees on 15th Street. There was a comedy show going on, which was actually pretty good. The comedian had fresh, new material (thank goodness!! You get tired of hearing the same things all the time). After that we went to a party at this club on South Street and the decor was amazing! The D.J. was a native New Yorker (yay New York...Go Giants!!!) so you know the music was banging.

Saturday he treated me and my friends to a ladies day out. We got pampered at the nail salon and went shopping. I found an entirely new shopping area in West Philadelphia where I brought a lot of cute stuff. I spent more money than I thought I would ever have. I mean, what woman doesn't love shopping?? After shopping, we came back to my dorm and ate Chinese and decided to catch a movie at The Bridge (a movie theater) on 40th and Walnut (you can actually walk there from campus). We saw "The Eye" which I thought was spectacular (and I must admit I did jump a couple of times). The plot was great, not like other horror movies that have no kind of storyline, this was like a horrific drama! I was wrapped up in the screen!!

So, my boyfriend left on Sunday and we enjoyed the best weekend we've had in a long time. When you come to Philadelphia, again I tell you, there's so much to do. Movies, shopping, pampering, and the greatest college ever. Does it get much better than that??
